[2003-12-22] Elm tree removed from Thayer St.

It took eight hours to remove the large elm tree from in front the Watson Institute, located at 111 Thayer St. in Providence, RI. Tree Tech Inc. worked cautiously to first segment the tree into manageable pieces and then load it onto trucks. The majority of the tree was moved to the Providence Steel Mill for storage, while the trunk was sent to a saw mill in Massachusetts to be seasoned and milled into boards.

The decision to remove the tree came after several attempts to save it from Dutch Elm disease, which continues to devastate historic elms on Brown University’s Campus. The tree materials will be used over the next two years by the Elm Tree Project,  a joint project between Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design, which will feature classes inspired by this and other trees.
